Owncloud

Owncloud is back, yes. Version 8 of the data synchronisation tool has come out.

Stupid me, I “clicked” the upgrade button and hoped for the best.

Since I am the only one using my Owncloud instance, I am pretty comfortable with updating the system on the fly. I know I should not do this, but my experience so far with the Owncloud upgrade packages has not have a single disappointment so far.

Upgrading from Version 7 to Version 8 is a major upgrade (hence the full version number) and therefore not as minor as the upgrades that come in between.

With version 8 I had to upgrade PHP from version 5.3 to 5.5 (due to dependencies to the package php5-acpu). That worked more or less. Just some minor issues

  1. The mentioned PHP upgrade. The documentation of owncloud server 7 had some remarks about PHP upgrades that that went easily through.

  2. The link to the SSL configuration in Apache committed suicide (/etc/apache/site-enabled/000….ssl.conf) and pointed into nowhere. This lead to SSL login not being available after the upgrade and therefore not synchronization with mobile devices either. I have to admit I rather see the synchronization fail than to delete all data due to no connection or other funny things. Just linking the existing SSL config file at the same location back into /etc/apache/sites-enabled and a quick $ service apache2 reload re-enabled SSL and the synchronization.

  3. No further issues.

What! What? On the system side there were no other changes necessary to get it up and running.

Within Owncloud on the other side things had changed a bit. Especially those things that tend to give me a heart-attack and make me gasping. After logging in I could not find the buttons for the calender and the contacts any more. Nada. Nothing.

Glad about that I had disabled the automatic sync on my clients, I knew I would have some time to fix this. Luckily right on the Start Page of owncloud.org an excerpt from the user forum stated the same “Problem”. Owncloud have moved the contacts and the calendar out of its core-functionality and into some app-framework.

This required me to login as an administrator and to enable the calender and contact app. After login with my normal user, all calender data and contacts were back again. phew.

The sync with the clients seems to work and everything else as well. Splendid!
